A California man shot a black bear that bit him repeatedly and had a ‘confrontation’ with his dog

A California resident was bitten repeatedly by a black bear that charged at him in his yard, before shooting it to save his dog.

The unidentified man was confronted Friday after seeing why his dog had run away when he was let out of his home in Calpine, a small rural town on the edge of the Tahoe National Forest, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

When the man went outside, “a bear came out of his neighbor’s yard and attacked him,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the bear did not stop and the Calpine resident suffered bites to his hand, wrist and leg.”

The victim managed to escape and “rushed back to the house, where he pulled out a shotgun,” according to the statement.

“Fearing for the safety of his dog, the resident went outside and ultimately shot the bear while it was in a confrontation with his dog,” the sheriff’s office said.

The resident went to a local hospital for treatment, but “did not require hospitalization,” according to the statement, without elaborating on the severity of the bite wounds. It was unclear if his dog was injured.

After reporting the attack, California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel found the bear “wounded by the previous night’s gunshot.”

“Wildlife officials euthanized the bear and transported it to Sacramento for a necropsy and rabies testing,” the sheriff’s department said.

The bear’s carcass was then taken to Sacramento for a necropsy and rabies test, the results of which are pending.
