A man wanted in Florida tried to mislead police with a “I don’t live here” sign

A Florida man wanted by police tried to throw them off his trail by posting a large sign outside his home that read: “Johnny Yates DOES NOT live here!!”

It didn’t work.

Yates, 41, wanted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on aggravated assault, false imprisonment and tampering charges, was eventually locked up.

Deputies showed up at Yates’ Lakeland home around 2:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving a tip that he was hiding inside, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.

“When officers arrived, they noticed a note written on a whiteboard in front of a window that said, ‘Johnny Yates does NOT live here!!’” the post read. “Wow…a blackboard never lied to us before, should we believe that?”

Officers questioned someone leaving the home, who confirmed that Yates was inside, but after surrounding the home for an hour and asking the fugitive to come out, officers had to take him to the next level, the office said.

“Enough was enough, and the ‘Surrender Smoke’ was released inside the house, and four people left the house, but not Johnny,” the sheriff’s office said.

“The officers yelled some more, but still no response from Johnny, so a second helping of ‘Surrender Smoke’ was placed inside the house to float around a bit.”

“Still, no response from Johnny,” the post read. “Eventually, deputies and K-9 Dexter entered the home and located Johnny, who was hiding in a modified dresser.

“Johnny was arrested and taken to jail.”

The office said the four people who were initially hiding in the house with Yates were also treated.

“As for the four people who did not cooperate with agents, each received a parting gift: a resistance charge and an all-expenses-paid trip to Grady Judd’s Bed & Breakfast.”

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, that is.
