Unless you’ve been isolated from the news, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma, the real-life inspiration behind the Bollywood film ’12th Fail’ starring Vikrant Massey, has probably crossed your radar.

Following the release of the film in October 2023, the 2005 batch IPS officer has been the subject of numerous interviews, creating inspiration for many.

Adding another feather to his cap, the Union Home Ministry has honored Sharma with the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM). This prestigious award recognizes his commendable service marked by ingenuity and unwavering dedication to duty.

IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma, a 2005 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) member, serves in the Maharashtra cadre and hails from Chambal, near Morena district in Madhya Pradesh.

Despite facing initial challenges, Sharma cracked the UPSC exam in his fourth attempt, securing 121st rank.

The film ’12th Fail’, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, was inspired by Anurag Pathak’s best-selling novel and depicts the exciting journey of Sharma and his wife, Shraddha Joshi, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer.

What has been rewarded?

IPS Sharma stands with 37 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel who received various police and fire medals on the eve of the 75th Republic Day.

The ministry statement specifically identifies Sharma, along with his Bihar batchmate Jitender Rana and several others, as recipients of the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM).

Currently, on deputation to the CISF, both Sharma and Rana serve in the force’s Aviation Security Wing (ASG).

These officials perform vital functions as Chief Airport Security Officer (CASO), supervising the CISF units at Mumbai and Delhi airports respectively.
