The site of London’s Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died in a fire, may become a memorial to the victims.
The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission has distributed pamphlets to nearby residents, proposing that a new memorial, with a garden, be built on the site of the building, according to The Guardian.
The current 24-story structure is severely damaged by the 2017 fire and is covered in protective wrapping. The most significant damage occurs above the 10th floor, government officials warned.
The commission said in a report that it would do its own independent assessment of the damage to “understand what might be possible,” including the potential use of parts of the structure in the monument.
“Whether or not it is viable to use the structure or parts of Grenfell Tower as part of the memorial, the commission recommends that height and visibility be considered in future memorial designs,” according to The Guardian, which saw all 50 – page report.

“We encouraged a creative approach to how this could be achieved, including possibly using lighting or other ways to create the appearance of height.”
Additionally, the commission has proposed a garden for people to “remember and reflect, both individually and as a community, on who and what we have lost.”
