The complex study has not yet been peer-reviewed, but it recently won a national sports medicine award in Finland, where the research was conducted for 45 years.

What have previous studies shown?

Several studies have previously established that those who exercise regularly live longer, healthier lives.

This time, however, researchers from the University of Jyvaskyla found that physical exercise may be only a minor component of the overall picture and, in some situations, may have detrimental health consequences.

Who participated in the study?

Between 1975 and 2020, around 11,000 same-sex Finnish twins were studied for the study. Participants reported their time and intensity of daily physical activity and were divided into four groups: sedentary, moderately active, active, and extremely active.

Overall, people who exercised less were about 20% more likely to die over 45 years than those who exercised regularly. When they assessed lifestyle characteristics, including education, BMI, smoking and alcohol consumption, the number dropped dramatically.

Therefore, the inactive group was only 7% more likely to die than the active group, and “no additional benefits” were provided by increased activity levels. The study found that people who exercised too much or too little accelerated biological aging.

How did the study end?

Those who were more physically active were about 1.8 years “older” than those who were less physically active. Researchers determined that those who exercise live longer not because of that, but because they live healthier lives in general.
