A security guard was shot in the back of the head Saturday while trying to break up a fight during the fourth quarter of a high school football game in Utica.

The shooting began shortly after 4 p.m. in a parking lot outside Thomas R. Proctor High School, the city police department said.

A group of a dozen people were fighting on the sidewalk when at least two gunshots were heard. shows the video of the incident.

One of the two security guards who had tried to separate the conflicting groups fell to the ground after being hit by one of the bullets.

He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The violent group had been turned away from the varsity game against nearby Binghamton High School by another member of the school’s police force moments before the shooting, according to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.

The stadium is equipped with metal detectors, but the guard directed the group away before they could be alerted to the firearm.

“He suspected something was wrong with this group and refused to enter the stadium,” Williams said.

Police said a lone gunman, who is still at large, is responsible for the escalation of violence.

Officers have not yet discovered the motive for the punching, but said it was possibly gang-related.
