Terrifying dash cam footage shows the moment a suspected drunk driver crashed headlong into a police cruiser driven by a cop who was searching for him.
“Officer looking for DUI suspect finds him the hard way,” Virginia officials said on Facebook Wednesday.
The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office was searching for the allegedly drunk driver around 2:45 p.m. on December 1 after receiving numerous calls reporting his suspicious behavior.
Deputy Tibor Kreiter was driving on a rural two-lane highway approximately 50 miles north of Richmond when the same truck he was looking for quickly came into view of oncoming traffic.
The truck crossed the yellow lines directly toward the patrol car. Law and crime
The truck missed the curve in the road and crossed the yellow dividing line and crashed directly into Kreiter’s patrol car.
Footage shows Kreiter attempted to swerve off the road and out of the way, but was blocked by trees to his right and other cars to his left.
The accused drunk driver hit the left side of the patrol car with such force that the rear wheel was thrown off. The remains of the destroyed car were scattered across the street.

Fortunately, Kreiter, assigned to the traffic department, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The alleged drunk driver, John Anthony Fields, 57, was arrested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and failure to drive on the right side of the road.
He was placed in the Central Virginia Regional Jail and later released on bond.

Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger Harris said he was “extremely grateful” that no one was seriously injured in the collision.
Virginia has some of the strictest drunk driving laws in the country, according to the DMV.
A driver convicted of a first-offense DUI faces a minimum punishment of a $250 fine and revocation of the driver’s license for one year.
