Animal shelter filled with Christmas cheers as kennels emptied and a single stray cat remained: ‘A true miracle’

A Pennsylvania animal shelter is overjoyed this holiday season after cleaning out its kennels.

The Adams County SPCA in Gettysburg had a lot to celebrate after cleaning out its kennels for two weeks, except for a stray dog that arrived “a while ago,” staff announced on Facebook.

“Our community stepped up once again! “This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA has been empty, let alone on Christmas,” the post read.

“It’s a real miracle!”

“To say we are beyond excited is an understatement!”

They celebrated by posting a photo of smiling staff members kneeling and standing before the open doors of a row of empty kennels.

The shelter adopted nearly 600 animals into new homes this year and reunited 125 with their owners, staff said.

Since their shelter is now empty, they announced they will be accepting animals from nearby pounds to help “relieve some of their stress.”

The Post has contacted the Adams County SPCA for comment.

According to the ASPCA, about 6.3 million animals are taken to shelters each year.

About 4.1 million animals are adopted each year, while approximately 920,000 are euthanized.

A shelter near Albany, New York, is “more than full,” according to Ashley Jeffrey Bouck, executive director of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

The number of animals entering shelters began to increase in 2021, after a pandemic-related decline was reversed. Adoptions have not kept pace with the influx of pets, causing shelters to fill up with animals.

Shelter Animals Count, a national database of shelter statistics, estimates that the U.S. shelter population grew by nearly a quarter of a million animals in 2023.

“The economy right now is really challenging for a lot of families,” said Kim Alboum of the Bissell Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization.

“And with the housing crisis, people are losing their homes and having to downsize or move in with other people. And this is a recipe for disaster for people who have larger dogs.”
