The few new features, particularly on the iPad, seem to play on Apple’s strengths with its homegrown silicon, with enhancements that make it easier for kids to learn online and work from home for adults. iPhone 13 will be available in four models, each with the same screen sizes and starting costs as previous iPhones, but with more processing power, improved cameras, and twice the base storage of iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Small.

The new lineup is powered by the A15 Bionic chipset, which has 5-nanometer technology and a six-core CPU. This processor not only makes phones faster and smarter, especially when it comes to machine learning and artificial intelligence, but it also allows Apple to work on camera improvements, which are obviously one of the biggest selling points for phones these days.

And it’s clear that Apple wants to emphasize camera features across the board. So, like point-and-shoot cameras, upcoming iPhones will use computational photography to provide a cinematic video mode with algorithm-based automated focus shifting and customizable photo settings.
Apple is even promising a ProRes Video later this year, which is similar to a RAW video file in 4K resolution that has never been seen on a smartphone before. This is definitely geared towards promoting the iPhone Pro series as the smartphone of choice for creative professionals. Apple is also introducing macro photography for the first time with the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone Pro series.

Variants of the iPhone 13 Pro also have a 5-core GPU for enhanced graphics, as well as a Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion that can go from 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rate when needed to demonstrate this capability. This is not new; Samsung and other Android flagships have been pushing it for a few years, but turning it on means that the app ecosystem will finally adopt it as a standard when developing new products.
