Last Thursday, the Metro Inner-South Joint Development Assessment Panel in Perth granted approval to Grange Development for the construction of a massive building known as C6. This structure will be built using a combination of materials, with wood making up 42% of its composition, while the core will be made of reinforced concrete.

What building has the current title?

The current record holder for the tallest wooden tower is the Ascent Building in Wisconsin, at 284 feet and 25 stories. However, this height is less than half of the C6’s planned 627-foot, 50-story height.

C6 also surpasses Atlassian’s upcoming headquarters in Sydney, which is expected to reach a height of 599 feet upon completion in 2026. This means C6 could hold the title of tallest wooden tower for a few years before the Atlassian headquarters claims it.

However, it is important to note that no end date has been set for the C6.

Both the C6 and the Atlassian building will use a combination of a steel exoskeleton and laminated timber beams, which is being praised as a more environmentally friendly construction method.

Developer Grange director James Dibble wrote in his submission to authorities: “We cannot grow concrete” and referred to C6’s plan as “a new open source model that uses a hybrid construction methodology to offset carbon within of our built environment. which is the largest contributor to climate change.”

Dibble added, according to cnn“This is our chance to say that we really care about both the housing crisis before us and the climate crisis that we are doing very little about as an industry.”
