The world is all shades of pink now. With the bombastic release of the Barbie movie in theatres, months of blinding pink marketing have proved worthwhile. The film has not only revived Barbie’s significance in pop culture but has also given life to other characters in the Barbieverse.
One such character is “going once and going twice” on eBay for soaring prices after the release of Greta Gerwig’s movie. The film is based on Mattel’s iconic doll ‘Barbie’ and also gives space to the numerous other dolls that were added to the Barbieverse.

From Barbie’s supportive beach beau Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, to Issa Rae’s president Barbie, the film brought many dolls that were otherwise buried to the fore.
The Allan doll was one of these revived masterpieces. Mattel introduced Allan in 1964 as a friend of Ken’s who could wear the same clothes as him. The doll was inspired by Barbara Handler’s husband, Allan Handler. For those unaware, Barbara is the viral old lady in the film who is also the daughter of Ruth Handler, the businesswoman who invented the first Barbie doll.

Back in the 60s, the Allan doll flopped because parents at the time assumed that his cloth-sharing relationship with Ken was somehow queer-coded. A sentiment that pearl-clutching parents wanted nothing to do with. So, the doll flopped and was eventually discontinued.
However, Mattel worked to revive the doll again in the 1990s, and this time it got rid of the extra “l” in its name. The doll was relaunched as Alan, husband to Midge, who was Barbie’s pregnant friend. This seemingly took care of the queerness surrounding the doll and turned it into an all-American dad.
But the doll never stuck. It was left abandoned in the dumps, never really soaring as a must-have doll in a child’s Barbie set.

Until the Barbie movie resuscitated Allan’s character, Even though Michael Cera, playing Allan in the film, has very few scenes, people have passed judgement that the Allan doll is indeed iconic.
With Allan getting revived in the film, the prices of the doll on eBay soared exponentially.
While people are now selling their vintage Allan dolls for $400 to $500 (Rs 32000–41,000) on the platform, these dolls were probably only bought for about a meagre $50–$70 (Rs 4000–5700). That is some pretty good math, if you ask us.
Not just the Allan doll, but Barbie collectibles as a whole are selling like hotcakes on the Internet, which is simply all thanks to Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ release.
