Truex said the LPD Collision Reconstruction Unit was examining the collision Thursday morning. It is unknown what type of vehicle was involved in the collision. Data from the Kentucky State Police indicates that as of the end of November of this year, 48 fatal collisions had been reported in Lexington. 38 people died as a result of 35 fatal accidents that occurred in Lexington last year. This year’s first fatal bicycle-related collision is also the first since June 2022, when Michael Hensley, 30, was hit by a car at the intersection of High Street and Oliver Lewis Way and died.

The motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries when he was taken to a UK hospital. Although the accident reconstruction unit was investigating the scene, it is still unknown what specifically caused the accident. “It leaves a sad feeling,” said Steve Zdasar, a volunteer and bike mechanic at community bike company Broke Spoke. He could have just been someone trying to get home after work. You know, rush hour is four o’clock. Zdasar claims that he rides his bike several times a week and that the city does not offer adequate protection to cyclists. “The problem with many of our bike lanes is that the only thing keeping cyclists safe is a reflective strip on the road,” Zdasar said. “A car won’t stop with that.”
