WASHINGTON — Tell us something we don’t know, Joe.
President Biden told reporters on Friday that the US-Mexico border is not secure, contradicting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after backing “massive changes” to immigration policy.
“No, it is not,” Biden said when asked if the border was secure following remarks before a bipartisan group of mayors in the East Room of the White House.
During his speech, Biden, 81, said he expected Senate negotiators to announce a compromise next week on border policy as part of a broader $106 billion supplemental spending request that would also fund military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

“I believe we need significant policy changes at the border, including changes to our asylum system to ensure we have the authorities we need to control the border. “I am ready to act,” the president said.
“Now the question is for him [House] Spokesman [Mike Johnson] and House Republicans: Are you willing to act too?” Biden added.
“They have to choose whether they want to solve a problem or continue using the issue as a weapon to score political points against the president. I am ready to solve the problem. I really am,” he added. “Massive changes, and I mean it.”
It’s unclear what changes to asylum policy might be acceptable to all three: the White House, Senate Democrats and House Republicans.

Current administration policy allows nearly all immigrants who illegally cross the border to enter the United States to await backlogged asylum procedures, entitling them to work permits after an initial waiting period.
Shortly after taking office in 2021, Biden ended former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required most asylum seekers to await rulings in their cases while remaining south of the border.
Mayorkas, whose Department of Homeland Security manages border policy, outraged Republicans in the spring of last year by repeatedly claiming that “the border is secure” while record numbers of foreigners crossed illegally.
Despite appearing to disavow Mayorkas’ claims, Biden defended his DHS chief when asked about House Republican efforts to impeach and remove him, telling reporters Friday that “I don’t understand it.”

Biden expressed his willingness to get tough on illegal immigration as polls show dismal approval ratings for his handling of the migrant crisis after December saw an all-time high in illegal crossings, capping an unprecedented calendar year.
“I love how I turned on [TV] and ‘Biden is for a free and open border, just tear it all down, everyone come, no restrictions,’” the president sarcastically commented during his speech.
Biden also defended his record, including citing reform legislation he sent to Congress in 2021 that would legalize most immigrants currently in the U.S. illegally, as well as pointing to a request in October for more security funding. border after fiscal year 2023, which ended September 30. A historical record of illegal crossings was also recorded.
