The popular Netflix series “Black Mirror” has gained recognition for its thought-provoking episodes that explore the darker side of technology and its impact on society. Interestingly, many real-life cases have emerged that resemble the fictional scenarios depicted on the show.
From surveillance technologies and social media manipulation to the ethical dilemmas surrounding artificial intelligence, “Black Mirror” often reflects on the potential consequences of our growing reliance on technology.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Li Xin confronted his landlady in Singapore because he was upset about the slow Wi-Fi speed in his apartment.
The incident happened on Wednesday when an argument broke out between Li Xin and his 61-year-old landlady. In a fit of rage, Li Xin brandished a knife, threatened to harm the entire family, and proceeded to strangle her landlady.
He pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation, with intent to cause death and harm by choking his landlord’s neck. A hotel housekeeper, Li Xin, was sentenced to five months in prison.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the incident involving Mr. Li occurred on May 16. Mr. Li, who was drinking and playing games on his mobile phone, got angry at the slow speed of his Internet connection.
Then he went to the landlady’s room and demanded that she come out.
When an argument ensued, Mr. Li brandished a 14 cm knife and forcibly pushed the older woman into her room, throwing her onto the bed.
After the confrontation, Mr. Li proceeded to strangle the landlady.
However, the owner somehow managed to calm him down.
Another tenant, Mr. Ji Zhaoliang, called Mr. Li while the incident was taking place. The owner yelled at Mr. Ji, asking him why he hadn’t come back to the apartment after work and urging him to come back quickly.
After the call, Mr. Li responded to the landlady’s question about Mr. Ji’s lateness with a chilling statement: “Because I told him I would kill his entire family and all of you.”
Eventually, it was Mr. Ji who intervened and stopped Mr. Li after he got home.
During his court appearance, Mr. Li petitioned the judge for leniency, citing his lack of knowledge of Singapore’s strict laws.

On the charge of causing harm by strangulation, Mr. Li could have faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison, a US$3,730 fine, or both.
