Brave homeless man becomes lifeguard during apartment fire, saves mother, daughter and pets

Claudia Jimenez, a mother from Phoenix, woke up Thursday morning to find flames in her apartment.

She and her two young daughters were trapped, with the front door blocked by flames, and all she could do was call for help. “I opened my window and started yelling, ‘Please someone help me, there’s a fire, I can’t get out the front, I need someone to help me,'” Claudia told CBS News.

Even before the fire department arrived, help arrived from an unexpected source.

Joe Hollins and his wife were camping near Claudia’s apartment when they heard the screams and ran to the family’s aid.

“All I see is a lady opening the window and yelling, ‘Please help me, please help me,'” Hollins explained.

Claudia said Hollis slid under the window and ordered her to bring her two children to him. She “was right under her and she said, ‘Yeah, throw your daughters out, I’m going to get them, I’m going to get them.'”

Valerie, 1, was the first to go. Natalie, 8, was next. Claudia then threw away the two family pets. Hollis successfully captured them all, but when it was her turn, Claudia froze. “At first, she didn’t want to come. She was afraid of falling,” Hollins explained.

“I was like, ‘I got you. Don’t worry.'”

Claudia finally made the leap and landed safely in Hollins’s arms. The fire department responded quickly to put out the fires, and after everything calmed down, the grateful family claimed that Hollins saved their lives.

“I’ll be forever grateful, you know? Like I said, he was an angel to me,” Claudia said.

“Thanks to him, we are here, alive, and my daughters are safe.” Hollins, on the other hand, refused to listen to the praise, stating that anyone would do the same.

“Those are children,” he noted. Although Claudia and her family are safe, they, like many other inhabitants of the building, have lost everything. Community members are currently donating funds to help the survivors. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

What to do if there is a fire in your building?

If there is a fire in your building, it is critical to take immediate action to ensure your safety and the safety of others. This is what you should do. If you discover a fire, notify others immediately by activating the fire alarm system or shouting to alert those nearby.

This will help ensure that everyone in the building is aware of the emergency.

Leave the building as quickly and calmly as possible. Please follow designated evacuation routes and do not use elevators. If there is smoke, stay low to the ground where the air is less toxic.

Once you are out of danger, call the emergency services hotline (eg, 911) to report the fire. Give them accurate information about the location, size, and any other relevant details about the fire.
