Brazil zoo gives popsicles to monkeys to help them cool off during rare winter heat wave

In an unexpected turn of events, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is experiencing an unusual heat wave during what is still winter there. To keep their furry friends cool during this unseasonably warm weather, Rio Zoo keepers have come up with a clever solution.

The cool treat that people usually enjoy on sweltering summer days – popsicles – has been adopted by the monkeys at the Rio Zoo.

Why does this zoo give popsicles to monkeys?

On Friday, black spider monkeys at Rio de Janeiro’s BioParque deftly made their way toward a zookeeper carrying a bucket full of fruit-flavored popsicles while chatting happily.

Therefore, both people and animals look forward to relief from the heat.

What the zookeeper has to say about it

“Normally, in winter, they rest from the heat, but it’s so hot that they even lost their fur coat,” according to zookeeper Tadeu Cabral, who distributed some treats while scattering others.

The monkey wellness program includes ice pops. They provide thermal comfort, and scattering the popsicles around the area also stimulates their natural urge to hunt.

The koala also received the popsicle.

In the 1990s, the elephant Koala, now over 60 years old, was rescued from a circus in Sao Paulo. He circled the block of frozen fruit with his trunk, pushed it under his foot, and then crushed the reward before swallowing it.

A zookeeper sprayed Koala with a hose to cool her down further. Elephants are water lovers. They also cover their backs with dirt to protect themselves from the sun and insects such as mosquitoes. According to zoobiologist Daniel Serieiro, the layer of mud is moist and helps her much more.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 C (104 F) in the state of Sao Paulo, as well as in the central-western and northern areas. Abnormally high temperatures related to global warming increase the possibility of wildfires.

Firefighters in the northern Brazilian state of Bahia on Thursday battled fires exacerbated by strong winds.
