A robbery suspect consuming gasoline was captured sitting in the garage of the home he was accused of breaking into last week in Washington.
Seattle police said they received a call Friday morning when a 17-year-old girl claimed that a man with a wooden stick had tried to break into her parents’ home around 11:30 a.m.
“Fearing for the safety of the child’s life, officers broke down the front door to gain entry and began searching for the 17-year-old victim and suspect,” a statement from the Seattle Police Department read.
During the search, officers heard banging inside the home and found the 40-year-old man sitting in the front seat of the car with a red can of gasoline and a hammer in his lap.
As police approached the car, the suspect put a mouthpiece in his mouth and began to drink gasoline before replacing the container and wiping his mouth, according to police body camera footage.
The suspect remained locked inside the truck, trying to negotiate with them and claiming he “didn’t want any trouble.”

Police broke the driver’s side window and the suspect took this as reason to take another drink of gasoline.
“What…?” an officer said in the footage.
Several officers removed the suspect from the car and pinned him to the ground.
Police found the 17-year-old on the second floor and brought her to safety.

The man was treated by paramedics and later booked into the King County Jail for residential burglary.
According to Seattle police data, the city of Washington has experienced more than 22,000 property crimes this year, with burglaries being second on the list with approximately 4,750 crimes, but only 602 arrests were made in 2023.
