California drunk driver pleads guilty after crashing into anti-drunk driving sign

A woman has pleaded guilty in California to driving under the influence after crashing into a sign warning drivers against drunk driving.

Clarissa Hernandez, 27, of Texas, had drunk a pint of tequila minutes before she got behind the wheel of her Land Rover in the early hours of August 11 and crashed into an electronic sign in Palm Springs that read, “Do not drink or drive.” , according to a police statement.

The impact of the crash mangled the sign, but police said the situation could have been much worse because the splashed driver had narrowly avoided colliding with a group of pedestrians leaving a nearby theater.

Officers stationed at the checkpoint near the crash site ran and saw Hernandez staggering away from his wrecked vehicle.

“His eyes were bloodshot, red and watery, and he spoke with difficulty. She was continually rocking back and forth,” reads a report of the incident cited by broadcaster KESQ.

Hernandez even leaned on the vandalized sign resting on its side to steady himself as he walked, police said.

Far from showing remorse for what happened, the woman was described in the report as “angry, argumentative and hostile.”

When asked about his alcohol consumption, Hernandez allegedly admitted that he had drunk tequila just 10 minutes before crashing into the sign.

The accident occurred early on August 11 at the intersection of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Alvarado Street in Palm Springs. google maps

At one point, Hernandez allegedly waved his hand at an officer who attempted to stop him from leaving the scene of the accident.

On Wednesday, Hernandez pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and resisting with intent, and was sentenced to three years of probation.
