San Jose, California, is the most expensive city in the United States to buy a home, according to a new survey. There are a variety of causes that contribute to sky-high real estate prices, and your Bay Area friends would love I’ll tell you if you ever asked them (so don’t), but a 6-bedroom house for 1.55 million of dollars appears to be a bargain on paper.
This study, which was featured on MSN, revealed the average annual income required to buy a home in the top 25 cities in the United States. What is the average combined income required to buy a home in San José? $402,287.
A monthly mortgage payment of $10,057 is required and the median home sale price is $1.475 million. Isn’t $1.55 million for a six-bedroom house a bargain? Good.

Not always… A Redfin listing for a property in San Jose at 668 Potomac Ct. It has gone viral. The 6-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom property measures 2,743 square feet and is listed for $1.55 million. Information that the home includes an inactive methamphetamine lab and methamphetamine contamination is hidden in the listing.

According to the Zillow listing, “Unvented garage for home based on initial country testing. Home has ‘inactive’ meth lab and meth ‘smoke’ contamination; remediation process and associated costs will be borne by of the buyer. The house “has not been decontaminated and will be handed over to the new buyer in its current condition. There is no access until the property has been cleared by the Santa Clara County Health Department. The County denies access.”

How does it affect buyers?
So not only does the house have meth damage and an inactive meth lab, but you cannot use it and must pay a fee to repair it and clean it of the meth lab contamination. Of course, the story has gone viral on local news.
It’s hard to imagine a real estate listing like this anywhere else in the United States, if not the world. The top two comments on the ZillowGoneWild article sum up many people’s feelings on the matter.
“Sorry, I’m only looking for houses with an ‘active’ methods lab,” says one. That’s unacceptable.” Another responds: “I would think a dormant meth lab would devalue the property, but that’s just me.” San Jose is located in the heart of Silicon Valley.
