If you didn’t know, overhydration is actually a medical condition. It is commonly known as water toxicity and can cause seizures. Experts advise not consuming more than 1.4 liters (equivalent to six cups) of water per hour.

Shields shared that she was already dealing with low sodium levels at the time of her excessive water consumption, which can be very dangerous. Ingesting large volumes of water dilutes the sodium in the bloodstream, causing a condition known as hyponatremia.

Insufficient sodium levels cause cellular inflammation. In the brain, this can raise pressure inside the skull, which could trigger a seizure. Many medical professionals classify hyponatremia as a life-threatening condition.
