Car thief ignores road closure sign and rushes into hole created by landslide

Some signs are there for a reason.

A car thief on a remote Oregon highway got a nasty surprise over the weekend when they removed a lock sign and drove into a hole.

Authorities were called to the scene of an overturned car on fire shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday, the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver, and alleged thief, fled before the officers arrived.

“The road has been closed for some time, but they removed the barrier and the Road Closed signs and drove straight into the hole,” Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Berger explained.

A photograph showed the vehicle upside down and slightly charred.

The part of the road where the car overturned partially disintegrated as a result of a landslide in December, KATU said.

“This has been a constant problem, with people removing barriers and driving on the closed part of the road. Obviously, it’s extremely dangerous,” Berger added.

The car’s owner called 911 about an hour after the crash to report that the vehicle had been stolen early in the morning, the sheriff’s office said.

The owner’s house is about five kilometers from the accident site.

Both the robbery and the accident remain under investigation, authorities said.

Berger was not immediately available to comment on the investigation for The Post.
