What happened in Bihar?
A terrifying event surprised the devotees gathered on the banks of the Gandak river in Gopalganj district. A huge crocodile can be seen strolling through the ocean in a recent video posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). The crocodile was reportedly seen near Dumaria Ghat.
Why were the locals terrified?
The images caused concern among devotees who were planning to attend the river banks for Chhath Puja ceremonies.
Shortly after, local authorities issued guidelines urging worshipers to be cautious and avoid the stretch when approaching the river banks.
How have the authorities reacted?
The Gopalganj district administration has reportedly erected barricades along many ghats of the Gandak river to prevent visitors from entering deep waters. They have also placed signs along the river warning tourists about the alleged presence of crocodiles.
Why is Chhath Puja celebrated?
Surya, the Sun God, is worshiped in Chhath Puja. The event is often held in the month of Kartik of the Hindu calendar, which corresponds to October or November in the Gregorian calendar.
Devotees thank the Sun God and seek blessings of happiness, prosperity and well-being in this puja. Nahay Khay, Lohanda and Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya are among the four-day festivals.
Nahay Khay involves bathing in the water of the holy river. Fasting, special offerings and making ‘arghya’ or offerings to the rising and setting sun are part of the rituals. During this time, devotees, especially women, maintain strict fasts and worship the Sun God.
