Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Blames His Predecessor’s ‘Right-Wing Extremism’ for City’s Woes

If you can’t stand the heat…complain.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson complained Tuesday about “right-wing extremism” and blamed his predecessor, Lori Lightfoot, for the many problems plaguing the Windy City.

Johnson insisted he “inherited” the city’s ongoing immigration crisis and accused conservatives of unfairly caricatured Chicago as a crime-ridden metropolis.

“It’s abysmal, and it’s an affront to everything that’s good about this country, that extremism in this country is using people as political tools to settle political scores for something that happened 400 years ago,” Johnson said during a public safety talk. .

“They are still angry that a black man is free in this country,” the mayor continued. “This is nothing new”.

“Everyone knows,” Johnson added, “that right-wing extremism in this country has targeted democratically governed cities and, frankly, has been quite intentional in going after democratically governed cities led by people of color.”

“And their whole motivation is to create disruption and chaos,” he continued. “This is the same right-wing Republican extremism that stormed the Capitol. It is the same right-wing extremism that refuses to accept the results of the Civil War. “It’s ragged, it’s disrespectful.”

According to the most recent statistics from the Chicago Police Department so far this year, overall crime reports have increased 19%, motor vehicle theft has skyrocketed 47% and robberies have increased 25% .

In particular, murders have decreased by 12% during that period.

Johnson also criticized Lightfoot over the immigrant issue and praised the steps his administration has taken in response.

“[With] In the international crisis that I inherited six months ago, I have made it very clear that we are going to make sure that we get the people out of the police districts, the women and children who live on the ground and sleep outdoors, that we are going to create spaces that provide more dignity,” the mayor declared on Tuesday.

Since August 2022, more than 20,000 migrants have arrived in the city, in part thanks to a bus system implemented by states like Texas to transport them to sanctuary cities.

That influx has apparently overwhelmed the city’s social services. About 68,000 Chicago residents are believed to be homeless.

Johnson took credit for the “Unity Initiative,” a campaign to move immigrants from public areas to churches and other places of refuge.

“Did you know that when I was sworn in in May, the previous city council did not budget for the 2023 migrant mission?” he said.

“So not only have we raised the full force of government collaboratively, but we did it without the previous city council even providing resources for it.”
