China’s ByteDance defies Donald Trump’s TikTok divestment order

ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of the video-sharing app TikTok, has filed a petition challenging an order by the Donald Trump administration that will take effect on Thursday.

The company filed the petition with a US Court of Appeals in Washington on Tuesday night demanding that it get rid of TikTok, Reuters reported.

President Donald Trump ordered ByteDance on August 14 to get rid of the app within 90 days, ending Thursday.

Byte Dance is facing AD deadline to rebuild US ownership of the app to address US security concerns.

In the court petition, Tiktok asked for more time and said it had not received an adequate response to the proposed solution.

In a statement, the company said it appealed to the government to extend the 30-day deadline. ByteDance said they are faced with a number of new applications and have not made it clear whether their proposed solutions will be accepted.

TikTok has more than 100 million users in the US.
