Chinese tourists jailed for clicking photos with starfish in Thailand

Tourism is a vital industry that promotes cultural exchange, economic growth and mutual understanding among nations. Many countries warmly welcome tourists from around the world, allowing them to explore diverse landscapes and experience unique cultures.

However, tourists should remember their responsibility as visitors and ensure that their actions do not disrupt or damage the natural environment.

While tourism can be beneficial, instances do arise where tourists, intentionally or unintentionally, create inconvenience and disturb the delicate flora and fauna of their destinations.

According to a Bangkok Post report, two Chinese tourists faced legal consequences for their actions captured in photos that surfaced on social media.

The tourists were found guilty and sentenced to prison, along with fines. The incident occurred during a diving expedition near Koh Racha Yai, where individuals were photographed stepping on coral reefs and using starfish for selfies.

The images drew attention online, prompting authorities to crack down on tourists.

According to the police, Sanyang Qin and Wen Zhang, accompanied by a representative from the travel agency, were taken to Chalong Station for questioning.

The incident took place on Thursday when three Chinese tourists were accused of engaging in activities such as holding starfish and climbing coral reefs to capture images while diving in Ao La, near Koh Racha Yai.

After the tourists shared their photos and videos on social media the next day, marine protection officials immediately reported the incident to the police. A thorough investigation by the Phuket Coastal and Marine Resources Conservation Center confirmed that the accused individuals were indeed involved in illegal actions.

During the interrogation, the two tourists admitted their wrongdoing.

The police accused them of violating a ministerial directive to safeguard marine resources on the islands of Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi.

After collecting evidence, the police plan to present the case in court. Authorities are trying to track down another tourist who is wanted for the same offence.

In recent times, the Thai authorities have shown an increasing commitment to preserving their marine environment. They have implemented new regulations and guidelines to safeguard coral reefs and protect endangered marine species.

In addition, they have taken measures such as the temporary closure of entire islands to allow the natural environment to recover from the impacts of excessive tourism.
