Coastal storm could delay early holiday travel along East Coast next week

Two storm systems are forecast to merge later this week, creating a rough weekend for the East Coast and a wet start next week for early vacation travelers.

A low pressure system sliding across Florida this week will emerge into the Atlantic Ocean, and the FOX Forecast Center expects it to begin sliding toward the East Coast.

Over the weekend and into next week, this system is expected to merge with a storm system that will bring rain and snow to Texas, creating a messy mix of rain and wind for millions of people along the East Coast on Monday and Tuesday.

“If those two phases come together, then we’re talking about a much stronger system that will continue to move up the jet stream, moving toward the coast,” said FOX weather meteorologist Jane Minar. “The location of that minimum will be something we have to watch very closely.”

Those along the Interstate 95 corridor hoping for snow to see a white Christmas will be out of luck with this system, as it is expected to be a rain-only event in major cities including Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington .

“There’s just not enough cold air for the 95 corridor. For big snowfalls from coastal storms. Cold air is needed before and also during the event,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin. “So the snow portion would be more limited regardless of the atmosphere we have working right now.”

There is a chance of snow in parts of the inland Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Forecast details will be confirmed over the next day, but as of now, heavy rain and gusty winds are expected in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
