A major Japanese cosmetics company has begun testing artificial intelligence-based technology that allows users to instantly discover their risk of heat stroke simply by presenting their faces to a camera.
Pola Orbis Holdings Inc., a company based in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, has been piloting an AI-based risk assessment system on construction sites across the country since June. This is an effort to use the company’s expertise in face and skin research to address a social issue.
The company is working with Toyota College in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, the National Institute of Technology and IT start-up Dumsco Inc. in Tokyo’s Minato Ward. The method to recognize the risk of heat stroke makes use of AI technologies created by Toyota College.
AI-powered technology uses facial expression recognition to identify people who may be at risk of heat stroke, such as those who have a temperature of 37.5°C or higher or who have spent three hours or more outdoor. The temperature and humidity of the moment are taken into account to calculate the probability of suffering a heat stroke. The creation of cameras and other tools for use on construction sites fell within the purview of Dumsco.
In the trial, workers must reveal their faces before morning meetings and lunch breaks using tablets that have cameras mounted on construction sites in Tokyo and elsewhere, according to Pola Orbis. A “high risk” or other result is presented in approximately three seconds, and the results are also sent to a terminal device carried by the site supervisor. The technology is designed to allow the site administrator to instruct high-risk employees to take a break.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reports that in 2022, 827 workers suffered heat stroke at work and died or lost at least four days of work. Construction sites had the most cases of this type of incident, with 179. Although there are tools to assess heat stroke risk, there are problems, such as the challenge of simultaneously identifying several components.
