For an Australian couple, a beautiful trip to Guatemala took an unexpected turn when a simple Uber ride turned into an exciting adventure. What should have been a fee of $55 (around Rs 4,500) turned into a staggering bill of $29,994 (roughly Rs 24 lakh).
Uber charged them in US dollars instead of the planned Costa Rican Colon, blaming the error on currency conversion. This is what happened.

Couple charged with excessively high fee for a single Uber ride
The problem first arose when Douglas Ordóñez, the husband, tried to make a purchase with his debit card and was told there were insufficient funds. Perplexed, he checked his bank account and was surprised to discover a charge of $29,000.
Douglas Ordóñez revealed to Business Insider that he and his wife were in Guatemala to commemorate their fifth anniversary, which made this unexpected situation even more galling and distressing.
Because such a large amount had been charged to the couple’s debit card, their financial status became a source of concern for the remainder of their trip. Ordóñez expressed his disappointment, stating that dealing with this problem overshadowed his anniversary celebration, making it difficult for them to fully enjoy their time in Guatemala.
Adams, his wife, echoed his views, describing the sight of the charge on his bank account, especially such a large amount, as utterly alarming.
The couple received a refund for the incorrect payment
Fortunately, the issue was resolved after a few days of confusion, and the couple received a refund for the incorrect payment. This sad event, however, has left them with an unfavorable view of Uber and a reluctance to use the app again.
His frustration stems not only from the payment issue, but also from the difficult communication with Uber’s customer service.
Adams highlighted his dissatisfaction with Uber’s customer service, stating that he will most likely never use the app again due to the inadequate support they received.
Uber acknowledged the error and the subsequent refund process in response to the occurrence. According to an Uber spokeswoman, they take all reports seriously and their support team quickly corrected the issue after receiving the user’s report.
The spokesperson further stated that the time it takes to complete a refund varies depending on the policies of specific banks.
