Some ironies are so disconcerting that they seem written by a mischievous author playing a trick on reality. It’s as if the universe decided to roll a die of contradictions and see where they landed.
In a strange and unexpected situation, a news crew was held up at gunpoint while covering armed robberies.
The Univision Chicago TV news team, who was on site to report on the recent robberies, became a victim, ABC7.com reported.
The Chicago Police Department reported that a reporter and photojournalist were preparing for a live broadcast at 4:30 a.m. Monday. At that moment, a black pickup truck and a gray sedan pulled up in front of them.
Three individuals wearing ski masks and armed came out of the vehicles.
The thieves took the belongings of the victims, aged 28 and 42, and their video camera. However, no one was injured in the incident.
Detectives from Area 5 are investigating the matter.
The two individuals were covering a series of armed robberies around the city, including the armed robbery of a woman in the same area where they were robbed.
The images they captured were on the stolen camera and were never broadcast.
The reporter called the incident “complete irony” and mentioned that both were fine after being shaken.
According to Raza Siddiqui, president of the National Association of Broadcasting Employees and Technicians Local 41, “Our photographers and news reporters provide an essential public service in keeping our community informed. We are committed to ensuring that your safety comes first. We have spoken to the photographer who was mugged today and luckily he is safe and in good spirits.”
