CUET UG to not make board exams irrelevant: UGC Chairman M Jagadesh

The basic eligibility criteria for admission to universities remains unchanged, which is that a candidate must have passed the class 12 exam of any recognized board or equivalent, it said.

UGC President M Jagadesh said on Wednesday that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to undergraduate programs is not being introduced to make board exams irrelevant.

His statement came after the pass rate and the number of students scoring above 90 per cent and 95 per cent in CBSE class 12 declined this year and sparked debate over whether the introduction of the CUET has removed the board exams focus and end. making them redundant in the long run.

“The basic eligibility criteria for admission to universities remains unchanged, which is that a candidate must have passed the class 12 examination of any recognized board or equivalent. In fact, grade 12 qualifications for eligibility will vary depending on the programs and universities,” Kumar told the news. PTI agency.

“Furthermore, the board exam is a ‘performance test’ while the CUET-UG is a ‘selection test’. Therefore, it is unlikely that board exams at class 12 level will be become redundant,” he said.

“Students have been able to choose the subjects to take the exam and each university will be able to see each student’s individual subject portfolio and admit students to their programs based on individual interests and talents,” he added.

When asked about how CUET will give students an advantage over board exam scores for UG admissions, Kumar said, “In the past, students used to be under stress to get more than 95 percent.” of class 12 board exam scores to gain admission to the university of your choice.

“With the introduction of CUET, the pressure on them to achieve very high marks in the exam positions of the only board was reduced. The marks awarded by different boards vary widely due to the typology of the questions and the pattern of scoring. These things will now be standardized under CUET,” he said. UGC, in March last year, announced that undergraduate admissions will be made in all central universities through a common entrance test and not based on class 12 marks. This year, CUET UG exams start as of May 21.
