An elderly D.C. man stabbed his wife to death because he wouldn’t eat pancakes she made for him, authorities announced Friday.
Steven Schwartz, 85, allegedly plunged the carving knife into the back of Sharron Hilda Schwartz, 81, at her Northwest D.C. home on Sunday after she tried to push sweet breakfast treats on him to help him gain weight. , according to a federal criminal complaint.
“I killed her, oh my God. I don’t remember it was a crazy fight! Schwartz allegedly said while he was sitting in the back of a police cruiser.
The accused killer told detectives that he had lost up to 50 pounds during a recent hospital stay due to physical and psychiatric disorders and that Sharron was trying to regain her weight.
Schwartz described his wife as “kind of like a taskmaster,” but admitted that she did it because “she loved him so much that she [she] “She wanted him to be okay and she wanted her partner and protector back,” the documents state.
Sharron reportedly shoved the pancakes at him after finding out he wasn’t planning on eating breakfast because he had eaten a quarter of a Krispy Kreme donut the day before.
Schwartz relented, but quickly changed his mind, sparking the deadly argument.

That’s when Schwartz allegedly grabbed a carving knife from a butcher block and plunged it into Sharron’s back.
Neighbors heard screams coming from inside the house and called the couple’s son, who was forced to push his mother’s body out of the way to enter the house when he arrived minutes later.
“I stabbed her and then myself,” Schwartz allegedly told his son before handing him a knife.
When police arrived, Schwartz had grabbed another knife and was holding it against his abdomen, documents state.
After being stabbed, officers used a Taser and disarmed Schwartz before arresting him.
Both he and his wife were rushed to the hospital, where Sharron’s death was announced.

An autopsy report later found that she was stabbed once in the back and that the blade pierced her heart.
“I want to die so badly… I can’t stand food and she made me eat and we fought. She screamed and threw it at me. I have two diagnoses, depression and eating deviation. What happened, what exactly happened,” Schwartz allegedly told police.
“She doesn’t deserve this, I deserve it, she doesn’t.”
Schwartz was released from the hospital and arrested Thursday for second-degree murder while armed, federal prosecutors announced.
“The defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her in the back,” the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia said in a statement.
He pleaded not guilty to the crime, despite his alleged confessions in the moments after the crime.
Schwartz was remanded in custody without bail.
