Dad strips down to crop top, Daisy Dukes at school board meeting to protest lax dress code

It was father-body diplomacy.

A frustrated Arizona father stripped down to a midriff-baring crop top and disturbingly tight jean shorts during a packed school board meeting to protest its lax dress code policy.

Ira Latham took off his shirt at a podium, revealing a black garment straining beneath his substantial abdomen as shocked parents in attendance looked on during the late September meeting in Gilbert.

She completed the mismatched ensemble with a pair of skin-tight denim shorts, according to NBC 12.

“Under the proposed policy, this would be appropriate in a classroom,” he told the audience at the Higley Unified School District meeting.

Latham said she purchased the items at a local thrift store before her bold fashion statement.

The controversy first arose in May, when school board members discussed relaxing dress code standards that had not been updated since 2001.

The panel’s progressive wing asserted that existing restrictions disproportionately targeted women and proposed allowing exposed midriffs, spaghetti straps and sleeveless tops.

“We’re saying they need to cover up how this might make someone else feel and that’s wrong,” said board president Tiffany Shultz.

Others called for stricter dress standards.

“If we are preparing our children to be college and career ready, then they need to learn to have self-respect and that doesn’t include showing their body parts,” said panelist Anna Van Hoek.

Latham, who has a daughter in the district at Higley High School, took the last position.

“The dress code they wanted to get to is basically a dress code for a public pool,” he told NBC. “Make sure the kids cover their underwear and that’s it.”

Despite their last-minute protest, the board ultimately voted in favor of the more lenient dress code by a 3-2 margin.

“It will be more difficult for teachers to deal with this new policy,” the concerned parent said.

“It’s going to be a distraction in the classroom and some parents will want to take their kids out of the district.”
