Death of ice hockey coach Paul Theriault
Paul Theriault, one of the best and longest-serving coaches in Oshawa Generals hockey history, has passed away. Theriault was 73 years old. He coached the Generals from 1979 to 1989, with a free season in 1980–81. His record was 350 wins, 234 losses and 22 draws. He also won two Ontario Hockey League championships and never finished below 500. The General’s website reported his passing on Friday morning, January 5. Theriault’s best seasons were 1982-1983 and 1986-1987, when Oshawa won the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at home against the North Bay Centennials and the Soo Greyhounds, respectively.
But each time, Oshawa teams lost in the Memorial Cup final in 1983 to the host Winter Hawks in Portland and in 1987 at home to a formidable Medicine Hat Tigers team. He was one of three Oshawa Generals coaches to win the OHL Coach of the Year Award in 1986-1987. Theriault competed for Lake Superior State University for three years, from 1968 to 1971, and experienced the after-effects of post-concussion syndrome. He was forced to stop training and seek medical advice and attention. In 2012, “A Tribute to Turk,” a charity golf competition, was organized to help the instructor raise money for him.
