Redden’s adoptive mother, Karen Springer, told local CBS: “Oh my God, I went into shock.” I mean, watching it was heartbreaking and, like I said, ultimately it’s about her mental state. On Jan. 3, Redden, 30, appeared in court to receive sentencing for an attempted assault from the previous year.
Redden informed Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during that hearing that he did not believe he should go to prison as he was mentally “in a better place.” During court, Redden’s attorney, Caesar Almase, revealed that Redden had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. After a series of violent crimes, he had twice appeared in mental health court. Upon hearing from Holthus that Redden will be imprisoned once again, Redden jumped over the defense table, launched himself onto the judge’s bench, and landed on top of Holthus. The video shows an American flag falling forward and Holthus falling against the wall behind his bench.
Despite minor injuries, Holthus returned to work the next day. Redden appeared in court again Monday, where he received a sentence that could result in up to four years in state prison while jail security staff watched him intensely and shackled him. “I want to be clear that I am not going to change or modify the sentence I was about to impose last week before I was interrupted by the defendant’s actions,” Holthus said. Redden may be eligible for parole in 19 months, despite the four-year term. Regarding the fifteen additional felony and misdemeanor charges related to the courtroom attack, Redden is scheduled to appear before a different judge on Tuesday. If he were convicted, he could spend decades behind bars.
