The force of the collision forced the carriages of the Coromandel Express to overturn onto another track, where they collided with the rear carriages of the Bangalore-Howrah Superfast Express, which was moving in the opposite direction. More than 280 people died as a result of this series of events, while more than 1,175 were injured. The incident has prompted investigations into the safety of India’s rail system, as well as scrutiny of the activities of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The fatal train disaster in Odisha was discussed in a media interview by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Vaishnaw claimed that the cause of the accident and those responsible had been found, but withheld further information until the full investigation report was ready. Local media, however, have cited a preliminary investigation report that the crash between the three trains may have been caused by human signaling error. The accident was disputed by Union Railway Minister Vaishnaw, who attributed it to a change during electronic interlocking and acknowledged that the reason and responsible parties had been found.
Congressman Randeep Surjewala demanded the resignation of Union Railroad Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the wake of the tragic train tragedy. Surjewala provided a list of nine justifications for Vaishnaw’s resignation. A warning given in February 2023 by the Chief Operations Manager of the South West Railway Zone, which emphasized the failure of the signaling system, was one of the explanations given. The official expressed concern about serious failures in the system, such as changes to the dispatch route after a train has already started on signals with the correct appearance of the route on the SMS panel.
The warning emphasized the need for careful observation and system modification to prevent incidents from reoccurring. Surjewala further attacked Vaishnaw for missing the meeting on June 2, just hours before the Odisha train disaster, where the launch of the Vande Bharat train and higher revenue were the main topics of discussion.
