What does the restaurant offer?
CNN reports that an American company has collaborated with a century-old Hong Kong restaurant to offer a contemporary take on a classic dish, namely a snake on pizza.
The new product is part of the Hong Kong franchise’s marketing strategy, which aims to generate buzz online.
People in southern China and Hong Kong like to eat snake stew, a tasty soup that is especially good in winter.
Although snake stews come in various forms, they are always prepared with meat and Chinese herbs.
Certain snake stews contain additional meats, such as pork or chicken.
A local Cantonese tradition states that the best time to eat a snake is “when the autumn wind begins to blow”, which refers to when the snakes have gained weight before hibernating.
Many say that snake meat has therapeutic benefits, such as improving skin conditions and increasing body temperature.
In other Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand, where snakes are typically raised for food, there is also a rich culinary tradition centered around snakes.
Before the food went on sale last week, Pizza Hut Hong Kong stated in a statement that “nutritious” meat “can stimulate blood circulation,” a notion widely held in traditional Chinese medicine.
“Combined with cheese and diced chicken, the snake meat takes on a richer flavor.”
It said: “When combined with pizza, it represents a departure from the traditional notion of what it means to maintain good health while challenging the palate.”
When will you include this on your menu?
To create the newest dish, the brand collaborated with Ser Wong Fun, a snake restaurant in central Hong Kong with a history dating back to 1895.
The 9-inch pizza will be available for purchase until November 22 and has an abalone sauce base instead of the traditional tomato base.
Where is this restaurant?
Pizza Hut, an American corporation, has teamed up with a century-old Hong Kong restaurant to create a modern take on a classic dish called snake on pizza.
The new dish includes Chinese dried ham, black mushrooms and shredded snake meat – all essential components of a king snake stew – and is a cornerstone of the Hong Kong franchise’s internet marketing strategy.
How did the Internet react?
According to locals, snake soup is considered to be best enjoyed in the winter months in Hong Kong. They believe that eating snake meat will warm you and benefit your skin.
Snake meat is also consumed in Vietnam and Thailand, among other Southeast Asian countries. Typically, farms are used to raise snakes for food.
