Discord rolls out new warning system, teen safety features, and UX updates

Discord has announced an overhaul of its security and content moderation features, headlined by a new graduated warning system and protections aimed at teenage users.

The changes represent a shift towards transparency, education and proportionality.

The revamped warnings remove blanket bans in favor of informing users how they violated the rules and temporarily limiting their access. Discord will increasingly rely on temporary one-year bans for violations rather than permanent removals.

Offending users will receive direct messages explaining the warning or violation and what capabilities are restricted as a result. For example, those who post inappropriate images may temporarily lose image posting privileges.

Discord believes this nuanced approach gives people room to learn from mistakes. It also provides account status visibility similar to the Xbox reputation system. The goal is to improve behavior rather than simply punish users.

New Teen Safety Assist Features Launched

Additionally, Discord is rolling out a Teen Safety Assistance feature set designed to proactively protect minors. This includes a sensitive content filter enabled by default that blurs sexual content in direct messages and servers.

Discord will scan images using artificial intelligence to detect explicit material without human review, arguing that this method avoids serious privacy issues. But some may still question the platform’s approach, given its lack of end-to-end encryption.

Teens will also receive safety alerts when they receive direct messages for the first time, with links to block users or access safety tips. Discord plans to build on this foundation, including working on a grooming detection model.

Overall, the updates show Discord’s efforts to balance security with privacy while avoiding a draconian “three strikes” system. Its focus on reforming behavior contrasts with the lifetime bans common on many social media platforms.

Other new features include custom apps, dark mode, and in-app store

Beyond moderation, Discord shared other upcoming features, including a new darker Midnight theme on mobile, an in-app store with avatar decorations, and more visibility for third-party apps.

Discord continues to work to improve user experience and security while improving options for developers. These comprehensive changes are intended to keep the platform competitive as user expectations evolve.
