Professor Robert Thomas, consultant oncologist at Bedford and Addenbrookes hospitals, told the Daily Mail in an interview why eating burnt toast is not the best for our health.
What’s wrong with eating burnt toast?
While excessive consumption of burnt toast is unlikely to directly cause deaths, it is crucial to recognize the high level of risk associated with this practice. Implementing certain lifestyle adjustments, such as abstaining from smoking or reducing alcohol consumption, can significantly contribute to reducing health risks.
Additionally, a simple modification in toasting habits, removing the toast a little earlier, can marginally decrease the likelihood of developing cancer.
Yes, you read that right! Charred toast contains compounds that can progressively raise the risk of developing cancer over time. It should be noted that the intensity of these compounds is directly correlated with the degree of darkness of the toast.
Why is it bad?
Surprisingly, in addition to its unpleasant taste, burnt toast has also been found to pose a potential cancer risk. Dr Thomas explained: “This is because roasting or baking starchy or sugary foods (such as bread) at high temperatures produces toxic compounds called acrylamides, which can damage DNA and, over time, put great strain on the immune system”.
He added: “And, as a general rule, the darker brown they are, the more acrylamides they contain.”
What about other burnt foods?
The health risk is not just limited to toast; Excessive consumption of charred or roasted foods, along with starchy baked foods, can contribute to significant long-term health problems.
Adopting a philosophy of moderation in all dietary aspects while prioritizing overall well-being remains a beneficial approach to maintaining good health.
