Doctors reattach 12-year-old boy’s head after harrowing accident in miraculous surgery in Israel

In a miraculous medical surgery, doctors in Israel have managed to reattach a boy’s head to his body after he was in a terrible accident with a car while riding a bicycle. 12-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank, Suleiman Hassan, underwent what is known as an internal beheading.

After the crash, Hassan’s skull detached from the upper vertebrae of his spine. In medical terms, the condition is called a bilateral atlanto-occipital joint dislocation, according to The Times of Israel.

The day of the accident. Hassan was riding his bike when he was struck by a car and suffered fatal injuries. The boy was rushed to the hospital, Hadassah Medical Center, and immediately put into surgery in the trauma unit.

Doctors treating the boy at the time said his head was “almost completely severed from the base of his neck.” According to the orthopedic surgeon on call that day, Dr. Ohad Einav, the procedure took several hours to complete and required doctors to use “new plates and fixations on the damaged area.”

The doctor attributed their success to the knowledge acquired and the technology provided to them in the operating room. He also added that the team fought hard for the boy’s life, and luckily, they were able to save him.

Einav noted that Hassan has a projected survival rate of only 50%, and his recovery is nothing short of a miracle. The accident actually took place in June, but the hospital waited a month before announcing that its doctors had reattached a child’s head.

The hospital has now released Hassan with a cervical splint and plans to continue monitoring his progress and recovery for a while.
