Dog rescued after being trapped in cave with bear for three days

These firefighters are bearers of good news.

A dog was rescued after spending three days trapped in a Tennessee cave with a 200-pound bear, according to local officials.

Firefighters in Waldens Creek, about 25 miles southeast of Knoxville, responded to a report of a missing dog, Charlie, who was found trapped 40 feet deep in the narrow pit of a cave in the woods on October 10.

But when a firefighter went down into the cave to rescue the dog, he turned a corner and ran into a bear sleeping about five feet below the cub, trapping Charlie deeper in the cave, the Walden Creek Fire Department said.

The rescue team decided to set up a camera and wait to see if the bear would leave.

The next day, the bear left and did not return to the cave, allowing rescue efforts to resume, authorities said.

Using a rope system, rescuers descended into the cave and located Charlie, who was attached to a harness and carried out of the cave. “He was quickly reunited with the happy owner of him,” the firefighters said.

The video published by the department showed the moment when the black and brown are taken out of the cave to applause.

“Good Guy!” says one person.

Fortunately, Charlie was unharmed by his burly roommate.

“In total, Charlie was trapped in the cave for three days and for part of that time he (unintentionally) shared it with an approximately 2-year-old, 200-pound bear,” the fire department said.

“He was dehydrated and hungry, but otherwise in good condition,” they said.
