Expected Growth: The AI chip market is projected to reach $67 billion by 2024

The market for chips designed to handle artificial intelligence (AI) tasks is on the rise, growing at a rate of more than 20 percent each year, according to data from Gartner, a market research firm.

Gartner predicts that the AI chip market will experience substantial growth, reaching a value of $53.4 billion by 2023, which is a significant increase of 20.9 percent over the previous year. This growth is expected to continue, with a projected increase of 25.6 percent in 2024, resulting in a market value of $67.1 billion. Looking to 2027, the revenue generated by AI chips is projected to more than double the size of the 2023 market, reaching $119.4 billion.

As AI-based workloads become more common across various industries and IT organizations, the integration of AI chips into systems becomes more prevalent. This trend is particularly pronounced in the consumer electronics sector. Gartner analysts estimate that by the end of 2023, the value of AI-enabled application processors used in devices will rise to $1.2 billion, up substantially from $558 million in 2022.

Alan Priestley, an analyst at Gartner, highlighted the driving forces behind the surge in demand for AI chips. He noted that advances in generative AI and the growing range of AI-powered applications in data centers, edge infrastructure, and endpoint devices are necessitating the use of high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) and specialized semiconductor devices. . This, in turn, is spurring the manufacture and adoption of AI chips.

Priestley further noted that for many organizations, custom AI chips will increasingly replace the prevailing chip architecture, which is comprised of discrete GPUs. This change is particularly expected for a wide range of AI workloads, especially those that rely on generative AI techniques.

The rise of generative AI is also contributing to the need for robust, high-performance computing systems, both for development and deployment purposes. Many vendors now offer systems built around powerful GPUs, and network equipment vendors are seeing significant short-term benefits as well. Looking ahead, Gartner predicts that as hyperscale enterprises seek efficient and cost-effective solutions to deploy these applications, adoption of custom-built AI chips will grow.

In essence, the rapid expansion of the AI chip market is being driven by the rise of AI-based applications in various sectors. This trend is driving the development and integration of specialized AI chips, gradually reshaping the landscape of computing architectures.
