Fair Housing Month 2023
If we were to describe the Fair Housing Act in a few words, we would say that it was put into practice by signing it into law to end housing discrimination and protect housing rights. Let’s talk about it from the beginning. April is Fair Housing Month that same month, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act, also known as FHA, 55 years ago. But in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson enacted a groundbreaking law that the FHA signed in April as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which became landmark legislation. But the signing of the FHA Act in April also has a link to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., because Lyndon Johnson signed the bill that created the FHA a week after King’s assassination in a tribute to the King’s battle for fair housing.
Over the years, the Fair Housing Act has been expanded upon. It is now prohibited to discriminate in housing on the basis of color, race, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), religion, familial status, and disability. In celebration of Fair Housing Month, Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profit organization declared, this April, we recognize National Fair Housing Month. 55 years after the passage of the landmark Fair Housing Act, people still face discrimination in the housing market. People are celebrating the 55th Fair Housing Month in 2023. People have the opportunity to help others make one of the biggest and most important investments of their lives.
