First electric train to Nandi Hills from Bengaluru
To enable passengers to explore the Nandi Hills of Bengaluru, South Western Railway has opted to extend its Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (Memu) trains on the Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur route. We have great news for Bengaluru residents: starting today, Monday, December 11, you can take an electric train to Nandi Hills, a popular weekend getaway spot about 60 kilometers from the city. According to sources, South Western Railway has opted to extend Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (Memu) trains on the Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur route.
At the moment, trains like 06387/06388 KSR Bengaluru-Kolar-Cantonment Diesel Multiple Unit (Demu) and 16549/16550 KSR Bengaluru – Kolar – KSR Bengaluru Demu stop at Nandi station. The Bhoganandishwara temple, which is situated at the foot of Nandi Hills, is about 1.4 km from Nandi station, according to Siddharth Raja, a history enthusiast who lives in Nandi Hills. “To reach the top of Nandi Hills, one needs to travel another 15 to 18 km,” he said, recommending that the South Western Railway focus on shortening the distance to travel. Manjuu Nair, a university student, informed the media outlet that “the proposed morning Memu train from the city, which arrives at Nandi halt station at 6:37 am, might be too late for those hoping to witness “Sunrise in Nandi Hills.”
“Bettahalsoor is one of the intermediate stations where these trains should stop,” said Rajkumar Dugar, another railway activist. But since no agent is prepared to staff the halt stations for the pitiful compensation of Rs 1,500 per month, SWR does not offer halts at these stations.” SWR had earlier organized a one-day tour package along the 108-year-old historic train route connecting Bengaluru, Devanahalli and Chikkaballapur. Among other historical places, plans include visiting Devanahalli Fort, Adiyogi bust at Chikkaballapur (Isha Foundation), restoring heritage stations and scheduling sunrise trains at Nandi Hills, according to reports.
