Bear escapes from cargo crate on a Dubai flight
A bear cub can be seen exploring outside of its container on the plane in another video, while people pet and soothe it.
The bear was drugged and removed from the plane by a specialist crew in Dubai, according to an Iraqi Airways statement obtained by CNN.
On Saturday, the airline apologised, stating the bear had escaped the crate “upon arrival at Dubai Airport.”
“For reasons beyond the company’s control,” it wrote, “the company apologises to the passengers on the flight from Baghdad International Airport to Dubai Airport.”
“The delay was caused by a shipment in the cargo hold,” the statement continued.
“Upon arrival at Dubai Airport, the animal escaped the crate specified for its shipment,” stated the airline, adding that it was transported in accordance with international animal welfare requirements.
“The flight crew coordinated with UAE authorities, who dispatched a specialised team to sedate the animal and remove it from the plane. The flight returned to Baghdad after checking the plane and ensuring there was no damage from the incident,” the statement continued.
The reason for the bear being flown remains unknown
The airline did not explain why the bear was being flown to the UAE, nor did it provide any updates on its condition after it was sedated and removed from the plane.
Later Monday, the Iraqi transport ministry confirmed to CNN that there were two bears onboard.
“Two small, endangered bears were shipped from Baghdad, and when the flight arrived in Dubai, one of the bears broke his cage, forcing health and environmental authorities at Dubai airport to sedate it,” according to the statement.
As per reports, CNN has contacted the Iraqi government for more information about the bears.
According to the prime minister’s office, Iraq’s prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has asked the country’s ministry of transport to launch an investigation into the bear’s escape.
