Flood Disaster Breaks All Records In Slovenia, Damages Worth $500 Million Reported

Slovenia is dealing with unprecedented natural disasters, including the greatest floods in recorded history. The country, known for its beautiful landscapes and rivers, has been devastated by torrential rains, resulting in extensive floods and tragic repercussions.

Disastrous floods inflicted damage estimated at half a billion euros ($550 million). Prime Minister Robert Golob declared that this city had experienced the biggest natural disaster in its history.

In the small Alpine country, devastating floods killed three individuals and wrecked roads, bridges, and residences. According to Golob, two-thirds of the land had been damaged.

Golob described the floods as “the biggest natural disaster” in Slovenian history following a Saturday meeting of the country’s National Security Council. “Fortunately, last night was less difficult than the night before.”

Following the report of three weather-related deaths on Friday, Slovenian media reported on Saturday that one more person was found dead in the capital Ljubljana. The report has yet to be confirmed by police.

Flooding was triggered by severe rainfall on Friday, which led rivers to rise quickly and overflow into houses, farmland, and towns. According to Slovenia’s weather agency, a month’s worth of rain poured in less than a day.

According to experts, extreme weather events are exacerbated in part by climate change. During the summer, parts of Europe experienced record temperatures and battled wildfires.

Golob stated that road and energy infrastructure, hundreds of homes, and other buildings were particularly heavily impacted. Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and had to be rescued by helicopters or firefighters in boats.

Photos showed entire communities submerged, outdoor camping areas devastated, cars trapped in muck, and children’s toys piled up against fences. According to the STA news agency, major roads in Slovenia were partially closed on Saturday due to flooding, including the country’s principal highway. Dozens of bridges have also collapsed, and authorities have advised people to only travel once the damage has been completely assessed.

Earlier this summer, several violent storms in the Alpine nation blew off roofs, downed thousands of trees, and killed one person in Slovenia and four others elsewhere in the region.
