A Florida mother accidentally shot her son in the leg after mistaking him for an intruder, according to police who suspect “no criminal intent.”
The unidentified mother “had fallen asleep on her living room couch” in Pembroke Pines when “a noise in the kitchen startled her awake” in the early hours of Saturday, police said in a statement.
“Fearing it was an intruder, she pulled out a firearm that she had hidden in her purse,” the department said.
When the mother went to investigate the suspicious racket, her son, who she assumed was sleeping upstairs, emerged from the kitchen at the exact moment she was headed, the initial investigation found.
“They were both startled by each other’s presence and the mother accidentally fired her gun twice, hitting the ground once and inadvertently hitting her son in the leg,” police said.
The boy was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was only identified as a minor who lived alone with his mother, who was also not identified.
