A Florida mother confessed to strangling her 8-year-old son while he slept and then driving around on errands with his body in her car, according to police who called it “unimaginable.”
Shaneka Ann McKinzie, 36, was arrested after taking her son, Jaisyn Burgos, to a Miami hospital where he was pronounced dead Tuesday night, Miami-Dade police said.
“The mother confessed to investigators that over the past two days she plotted to kill her son,” police said in announcing a charge of first-degree murder.
“He further described that while the child was sleeping in the rear passenger seat of his vehicle, he used a tablecloth to suffocate and strangle him until he became unresponsive.
“She then proceeded to drive around various parts of the county running errands with her unconscious son’s body in the vehicle,” the department said.
An autopsy confirmed that the child had been strangled. He had not been enrolled in school since his mother brought him to Miami from Missouri a year earlier, according to NBC Miami, which said the boy’s father had died a few years earlier.

“It is very difficult to understand how a father can not only plan to murder his son, but after carrying out this murder he continues with his day as if nothing had happened,” Detective Andre Martin told the outlet.
“Driving with your son’s lifeless body and running various errands as if nothing had happened. It is unimaginable.”
