Former DeSantis employees rally for him in Iowa with 100 days left

More than 30 former staffers who worked for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis showed their support for his 2024 campaign in Iowa over the weekend.

They visited Smokey Row Coffee in Des Moines, Iowa, where DeSantis on Saturday marked 100 days until the Jan. 15 Iowa Caucuses, his campaign told The Post.

“Today I have in Iowa a group of members of my former staff, the Governor and Congress, who have paid their own way to travel to Iowa to be able to knock on people’s doors,” DeSantis said during his remarks. “Not all candidates have that, obviously.”

Attendees included two former chiefs of staff, Shane Strum and Adrian Lukas, as well as former Department Management Services Secretary Jonathan Satter.

“We have people motivated to do it, and I think it will be meaningful and impactful for a lot of these people when they see these people from Florida show up on their doorstep,” DeSantis added.

“And for those of you who are Iowans, it’s a lot colder than we normally get in the first week of October.”

DeSantis visited the Hawkeye State this weekend as part of a three-day bus tour with the Never Back Down Super PAC, which is aligned with his campaign.

The governor was a special guest of the Super PAC. He has tried to cover all 99 counties in the state and entered the weekend with 58 under his belt.

Many alumni of DeSantis’ gubernatorial team have immersed themselves in the 45-year-old governor’s campaign operations in the past.

For example, over the summer, he tapped James Uthmeier to serve as campaign manager after a restructuring by reducing his staff. Uthmeier previously served as his chief of staff.

DeSantis has invested heavily in Iowa, conducting a flurry of local media interviews in addition to intense campaigning.

His campaign recently moved nearly a third of its staff from Tallahassee to Des Moines.

Former President Donald Trump is the leading 2024 Republican candidate in Iowa with a 33.2 percentage point lead over second-place DeSantis, according to the latest aggregate from RealClearPolitics.

DeSantis has downplayed the polls, noting that they are early and arguing that many voters simply haven’t made up their minds yet.

Trump’s team recently sent a top adviser to Iowa, according to Bloomberg.

Given Iowa’s position as first in the national primary, it has the potential to give momentum to candidates in the 2024 Republican scrum.

Nationally, Trump retains a staggering 44.8 percentage point lead over DeSantis, his closest enemy, according to RealClearPolitics aggregate.
