Former Hamas chief calls on ‘Islamic world’ to organize global protests against Israel on Friday

The former Hamas leader called on Muslims to organize global demonstrations in support of the Palestinians on Friday and urged Arabs in neighboring countries to take up arms against Israel.

Khaled Meshaal, who was head of Hamas from 2004 to 2017, called on the Islamic world to organize the protests.

“[We must] Head to the squares and streets of the Arab and Islamic world on Friday,” Meshaal said in a recorded statement sent to Reuters.

Meshaal is based in Qatar, where he serves as head of Hamas’ diaspora office.

“To all the scholars who teach jihad… to all those who teach and learn, this is a time to apply [of jihad],” he said.

Meshaal specifically called on the governments and people of Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan to join the fight against Israel, calling their participation a duty.

“Tribes of Jordan, children of Jordan, brothers and sisters of Jordan… This is the moment of truth and the borders are close to you, you all know your responsibility,” he said.

Jordan, Lebanon and Syria have the largest Palestinian populations outside of Gaza.

Around the world, daily demonstrations have emerged for both sides of the conflict, many of them leading to clashes between Palestinian and Israeli supporters on city streets.

The rallying cry came as Israeli forces continued to counterattack the Gaza Strip in response to the bloody sneak attack launched by Hamas over the weekend, which left some 1,200 Israelis dead, more than 100 taken hostage and 2,700 wounded.
