This variant is known as ‘Thappad’ or Slap Kabaddi, with the main focus shifting from tackling or escaping to slapping contests. Also, unlike traditional kabaddi, which is played in teams of seven, this type of kabaddi thrives as a one-on-one sport.

According to a BBC story, the sport involves a lot of slapping, which most people find entertaining. Contestants dress in traditional attire and slap each other until you’ve had enough.

Huge crowds gather at the venues to watch the one-of-a-kind sport.

The match is between two people. The point is scored by a hitting player and erased by the other defending player. Hits are considered fouls in the sport.

A player can slap his opponent as many times as he likes; the number of slaps is not important, Haji Tassawur, a Pakistani slap kabaddi player, told the BBC.

The viral video shows two men playing Slap Kabaddi slapping each other across the face or chest until either a winner is declared or one of the contestants surrenders.

The winner is chosen from among those who have gathered to watch the game.

“People around here prefer to see slapping kabaddi instead of traditional kabaddi.” They enjoy watching the game and cheering and applauding,” Tassawur told the BBC.

He also stated that he tries to avoid injuries.

Kabaddi originated in ancient India

Kabaddi is a popular contact sport that originated in ancient India. It has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The exact origins of Kabaddi are not well documented, but it is believed to have been played in various forms in different regions of India.

The word “Kabaddi” is derived from the Tamil word “kai-pidi”, which means “to hold hands”. This signifies the essential element of the game, where a raider must chant “kabaddi” repeatedly while crossing the opponent’s territory, tagging his players, and returning to his side, all in one breath, without being tackled.

Kabaddi gained prominence as a rural sport in India, played mainly by farmers and villagers. Initially it was a form of exercise, a way to show physical strength, and a means of entertainment during festivals and gatherings. Over time, Kabaddi developed into a competitive sport with organized rules and structures.
